When Scott Kazmir and James Shields couldn’t stop the Red Sox, rookie pitcher Andy Sonnanstine who had lost 8 decisions in a row keeps the Rays from getting swept. Not that Kazmir and Shields did any worse then Sonnanstine, but on this occasion the Tampa offense gave the team a lead and the bullpen held.
Dice-K had one of his poorer starts of the year. Dice started the 3rd inning by allowing 5 straight batters to reach and 4 runs allowed. Carlos Pena lead the attack with 3 RBI’s. Dice-K ended his day with 6 IP and 6 ER. Leaving the Sox down 6-0 after 6.
Luckily going into the 7th the Sox finally got to Sonnanstine for 3 ER and the bullpen. Without such a poor bullpen the Sox never would have won the first 2 games. I’m sure true Tampa Bay Devil Ray fans would kill for some bullpen relief. They might be a much better team. Because like you would imagine once the bullpen came in the comeback was on.
In the 8th inning Manny Ramirez doubled to deep center scoring David Ortiz bringing the game to 4-6.
Then in the 9th inning Al Reyes entered the game for a save. Just the night before in game 2 Al Reyes blew the save and got the loss. Al Reyes started the 9th by allowing Coco a bunt single down the third base side. Then Julio Lugo, on another multi hit performance, a double to deep center bringing the game to 5-6 Devil Rays. 9th inning comeback anyone? Al Reyes looked like he was getting unnerved at the mound. Down by 1 with no outs and the top of the order coming up it looked like it was time for 9th inning magic. Dustin Pedroia after failing to lay down a bunt fell behind in the count and struck out. Youkilis doing what Youkilis does got ahead in the count 3-0. But only to get struck out in the next 3 pitches. Ortiz the shining hope, walked. And Ramirez with a man on 1st and 2nd swung at all 5 pitches he saw and ultimately striking out. Failing at the third late innings win in as many nights.
The Red Sox won 2 of 3 games against Tampa and their next series is 4 at Fenway against the Angels.
