Wily Mo Traded

Wily Mo Pena was traded yesterday for cash and a player to be named later to the Nationals to clear room for Clay Buchholz. The rumor is the player to be named later is Chris Carter, who is not in the Washington organization right now, but the Diamondbacks. As of last week Chris Carter was #9 on Baseball America’s list of top 1B prospects. Also to be noted is #2 on the list is another Sox prospect, Lars Anderson. Carter his currently batting .328 with 18 home runs and 81 RBIs for Tucson, Arizona’s Triple-A affiliate. There is reason to excited by WMP’s potential, as the Red Sox were. I’ve been there. I’ve experienced it. It’s not easy at all. I think it’s good for him to come back to the National League. There are too many off-speed pitches in the American League. I think he will do better hereā€¦There is way less pressure here than in Boston; he will find his way here. It will be good to have someone where the ballpark doesn’t matter to them.” – MLB.com“Nationals manager Manny Acta said he plans to platoon Pena in left field with Ryan Church. “This guy has a lot of potential,” Acta said of Pena. “He has not been able to play a full season. We know he is going to strike out a lot. Power guys do that. We are very interested in his potential. We need a power bat in here and I think he is going to bring that over here.”It’s no secret that the Nationals have been disappointed in Church’s offensive production. Entering Friday’s action, Church was hitting .265 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs, while struggling against left-handed pitching. Church has been on the trade block for many months, but Washington hasn’t come close to a deal. ” -MLB.com
