|Wakefield walking alone to the mound.|
Wakefield was going for a major league best 17th win until he pulled up with a sore back tonight. Wakefield has posted a decision in every one of his 26 starts this year. He is the 8th pitcher since 1957 to record a decision in his first 26 starts (Source: Dave Smith, Retrosheet). BUT he has been scratched and Julian Tavarez will take the mound tonight to pull the Sox out of their slump.
Tavarez has looked very strong. His last 2 starts against LA Angels and Chicago White Sox he kept to 3 ER in 12 IP. Julian was scheduled to start Saturday but had to be moved up because Wakefield has a sore back
The Orioles are currently on a 9 game losing streak. While the Sox are riding a 3 game losing streak. The last 3 game losing streak the Sox had was July 17th-19th. After that losing streak the Sox went on to win 5 straight.
When the Sox offense seems to be struggling this is one of the worst lineups to get things going. Manny is still out with an oblique injury and Eric Hinske is hitting 7th tonight. And with Wakefield suppose to be pitching Kevin Cash has the start. And there isn’t much we can do about JD Drew, Coco, and Lugo.
Luckily the same kind of oblique injury keeping Manny out is also keeping Eric Bedard from starting tonight. Although the Red Sox have never had much success against pitchers they’ve never seen. It’s certainly better then Bedard who leads the majors in strikeouts and is 4th in the AL in ERA.
Radhames Liz, the Orioles starter, has made one major league start against the Minnesota Twins. Where three walks, a well timed single, and a three run shot lead to a bloated 7.50 ERA. Liz managed the rest of the game well. On the AA Bowie Baysox Liz was 11-4, with a 3.22 ERA, 137 IP and 161 K’s.
It’s looking like an even match-up tonight.
GO RED SOX, BLOW THEM BIRDS OUT! Helps to be a homer at times.
-The Sox are 7-4 against the Orioles this year.
-Mike Lowell is currently riding a 12 game winning streak
-Mike Timlins next appearance will be the 1000th of his career. Something only 12 people have done in all of major league history.
