Celtics Four-Point Play 9/5

Here’s the first of a weekly series of the Celtics Four-Point Play to appear every Tuesday night/Wednesday morning on Sports of Boston. This is where I will compile four (4) small and related Celtics facts and offer my own spin on a variety of Celtics news stories. The general format will be a short blurb about the story first, then my reaction tabbed underneath it.

1. According to the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett, the Celtics have signed second-round pick Glen “Big Baby” Davis. The terms of the former LSU star’s deal have not been officially announced by the team, but it is being reported that the contract is a two-year deal, which is different than the usual three years that the C’s generally give to second-round picks (like Gabe Pruitt).

  • Big Baby waited a bit too long. The general team policy for the C’s would be to use a portion of thier mid-level exception on the third year of any contract for a second-round pick. Swingman James Posey signed with the C’s last week, and all the money remaining on the C’s mid-level exception went to the deal. You better believe Davis is kicking himself.
  • But, this could also be good for Davis. He could surprise and play a lot of quality minutes for the C’s the next two seasons. While unlikely, it isn’t impossible, and he would probably make a big payday sooner rather than later. Pruitt likely has a better chance of improving quickly, because the only player ahead of him on the depth chart is a second-year man (Rajon Rondo). Meanwhile, Davis is behind a handful of veterans at the forward positions.

2. Former Celtics forward Antoine Walker was robbed at gunpoint in his Chicago home in June, and finally the criminals have been brought to Justice. ESPN.com reports that four men have been indicted in the home armed robbery of Walker. “Prosecutors contend 28-year-old Antoine Larkins, 25-year-old Demorris Hill, 28-year-old Phillip Allison and 23-year-old Gregory Reedfields broke into Walker’s Chicago home June 9 and bound Walker and a relative with duct tape. They say the men then made off with Walker’s Mercedes, cash and jewelry.”

  • It’s great that Antoine’s OK. I hear he’s still shaken up by it, but will be ready by the start of the season. He’s one of my all-time favorite Celtics, and I was the happiest guy in the world when we got him back for a second-time a few years ago. I was also very happy for the veteran forward when he won his first ring after enduring a lot of down years with the C’s (I know, sounds like Ray Bourque all over again.)
  • I find it amazing that two of those robbers ALSO robbed the Chicago home of Knicks center Eddy Curry in similar fashion. You wonder how these guys got a hold of both players’ addresses. Good thing they’re in custody, and hopefully the police have the right guys…

3. As you all may know, Rajon Rondo now has a blog too, and he recently made a post about heading to Atlanta:

“I got here Friday, and I’ve just been hanging out. I needed a lil weekend trip to relax because I’ve been going soo hard in the gym. I’m just chillin down here with some friends. I went golfing for the first time…it was fun…I’ve got to work on my swing a little bit though. Other than that, I’ve just been playing cards and watching football. I love playing cards, and I take on all challengers…especially in spades!”

He then let us know he’s heading to Louisville to spend Labor Day with his family, then will be heading up to Boston soon. Good to know, Rajon!

4. I was combing through the RealGM Boston Celtics forums today, and I stumbled upon a thread where this guy (username Boston34Celtics) posted his YouTube video previewing the upcoming season. You can view it by clicking here.

  • I must say while the video quality isn’t the best, the video was a treat to watch. It’s a nice compilation of all the Celtics on the 2007-2008 roster (old and new). One user responded saying that he was surprised the guy found footage of forward Brian Scalabrine dunking.
