Celtics Win Shortended Game, 36-33

The Celtics’ fourth preseason game was unlike any of the previous three. They led a close game 36-33 at the half. The score remained that due to the game’s cancellation because of a damp court from melting ice beneath the floor. Worcester’s DCU Center is mainly used as a minor league and college hockey arena. More than 10,000 fans went home disappointed, but the Celtics did they best they could to please them by signing autographs after the game was called.

The game was a tale of two quarters. The C’s starting 5 played all 12 minutes in the first frame, dominating the Nets bench 21-8. The C’s bench played against Nets reserves in the 2nd quarter, with the Nets outscoring the Celtics 25-15. Nets stars Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson, and Nenad Krstic all did not play. What They Said
Ray Allen:

“I was sliding everywhere. I was a more leery every time I was coming to the basket because I was slipping.”

Kevin Garnett:

“It was unusual. I’ve never been in a situation like that.”

Danny Ainge:

“It was pretty unanimous amongst the players and the officials and the coaches that the game should be called.”

Game Notes

  • The Nets’ reason for benching their four best players better be because of the playing surface. I know it’s just a preseason game, but to play none of their good players basically ruins the game for the 10,000+ paying fans. Well, with the canellation, the C’s are offering a full refund to those who attended or a discount for tickets to a future game down the road. Check Celtics.com for more information about that.
  • For the 12 minutes he played, Rajon Rondo had a nice little game. He had 5 assists in the first quarter to go along with 2-2 shooting. I know it’s not much, but it’s good enough for the Stat Line of the Game. Expect Rondo to play a little more in his next game against the 76ers. Hopefully he stays this efficient (5 assists, 0 turnovers).
  • Miraculously, Perkins was only charged with one personal foul in his 12 minutes of play. He also mixed in a couple of rebounds and a blocked shot. He failed to score but it’s good to see Perk play the first quarter with just one foul. Keep in mind though that the starting 5 played against all Nets reserves, so there’s no true indication of how the Celts and Nets will match up.
  • It was nice to see Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis get to the line for six free throw attempts. For a rookie, he can show a lot of poise underneath the basket, so it’s good to see he can draw fouls. He hit four of them though, which isn’t terrible for a guy his size.
