Steinbrenner Says Yanks Offer “still the best one”

“I think the Twins realize our offer is the best one,” Steinbrenner told the Daily News in a telephone interview. “I feel confident they’re not going to trade him before checking with us one last time and I think they think we’ve already made the best offer.”

Its believed the Yankees have the offer on the table of Philip Hughes, Melky Cabrera, pitching prospect Jeff Marquez and another prospect, according to ESPN. If so this would seemingly be the best offer on the table. But the Yankees have been very hesitant to trade away Philip Hughes. Whether the organization has changed its mind, or just Hank, its not clear.

The Red Sox best offers have been Jacoby Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie, and a third prospect or Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and a 4th prospect. Whether this is enough no one knows but the Twins.

The Mets have also said they are in the running. Although they are not willing to part with Jose Reyes like the Twins want, they have a lot of other prospects that in combination could get the deal done.

Steinbrenner also had to say, “I either have to do it [a Santana deal] or don’t do it, same thing for the Red Sox, I guess, I think the Twins would like to keep him, so I don’t think there’s any hurry on anyone’s part. It all depends on what he asks for in an extension. You obviously have to be very careful with pitchers, for obvious reasons.”
