Lost in the mayhem of the Super Bowl, the pursuit for a backup point guard will continue for the Celtics as free agent Damon Stoudamire signed with the Spurs. He will get significant playing time there due to the Tony Parker injury.
The Celtics were said to have interest in the veteran, but the team lost interest and it seemed Danny Ainge didn’t want to screw with team chemistry. Stoudamire also didn’t like the fact that the Celtics were more interested in Sam Cassell than him, and he wasn’t going to wait until the Feb. 21 trade deadline to find out.
It’s expected that Sam Cassell will receive a buyout from the Clippers if he is not traded, and I fully expect the Celtics’ to pursue perhaps the ugliest man in the NBA. That’s fine, as long as he plays well behind Rajon Rondo. Cassell and Kevin Garnett remain close from their winning days in Minnesota, so that would also make any Celtics offer attractive.
Gimme some Sam Cassell!
