Ainge Named NBA’s Top Executive

(Update: More analysis of this Celtics story and others to come in Four-Point Play Column after Game 5)

Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge was named the league’s Executive of the Year on Wednesday. OK, we knew that was pretty obvious.

The real surprise? Not winning the award in a sweep. He beat out Los Angeles Lakers general manager, Mitch Kupchak, who had 14 votes, and New Orleans Hornets general manager Jeff Bower who had 12.

Ainge guaranteed this award in my book when the Celtics started 8-0. The biggest turnaround for an NBA franchise in history helped win it too.

Believe it or not, Ainge is the first Celtics’ executive to win the NBA’s Executive of the Year Award since its inception in 1972-73. Yes, not even Red Auerbach won the award.
