Gosder Cherilus and DeJuan Tribble, 2008 NFL draftees out of Boston College, have settled charges with authorities in the July 1, 2007 assault on Sean Maney at the Greatest Bar in Boston.
While neither was suspended by coach Jeff Jagodzinski for the incident, each accepted a year of probation and Cherilus agreed to pay $52,000 in medical bills for Mr. Maney. The alleged assault occurred as they proprietor attempted to clear space in the bar for the football players and their party to celebrate Cherilus’ birthday.
Cherilus, a standout offensive lineman while with the Eagles, was a second round selection of the Detroit Lions. Tribble, a playmaking, but small, safety for the program, was a sixth-rounder to the San Diego Chargers.
With the NFL’s crackdown on off-field problems, it will be interesting to see if there are any ramifications for the players. It is perhaps unlikely as the events did not occur while they were affiliated with the NFL, but commissioner Roger Goodell has made player discipline and league reputation among his top priorities in his short time in the job so far.
