Red Sox Sign Draft Pick Kelly

The Red Sox have signed their first-round pick Casey Kelly, a combination shortstop and pitcher. Kelly will be assigned to the Rookie League Gulf Coast Red Sox.

GM Theo Epstein said that Kelly will start as a shortstop in the minors and eventually be eased in as a pitcher.

Kelly had been committed to playing football and baseball at Tennessee before deciding to play with the Red Sox.

The Sox also inked 18-year-old shortstop Derrik Gibson, the club’s second-round pick.
