The Red Sox claimed OF Brian Giles off waivers, perhaps to block the Tampa Bay Rays or Los Angeles Angels (the only two teams with better records in the A.L.) from acquiring him.
The Sox now have 10 days to reach a deal with the Padres. Under his current contract, Giles has the right to veto trades that involve 10 teams, and the Red Sox are included on that list.
The 37-year-old Giles is having a solid season for the Padres, hitting .296 with 6 HRs and 37 RBI. He also has 61 walks to give him a .391 OBP.
If the Padres and Red Sox can’t work out a trade, Giles can return to San Diego.
