Pedroia Slams Yankees to the Brink

You can just tell the Yankees are done now.

The Red Sox faced a similar situation in 2006, when the Yankees rolled into Fenway and won five straight to effectively knock the Sox out of the playoffs. Now, in 2008, the Red Sox have the chance to do the same thing after obliterating the Yankees in the eighth inning of an 11-3 win.

Up only 4-2 in the eighth, the Sox put up seven runs to take an 11-2 lead, thanks to an RBI triple from Jason Bay and…with one swing of the bat, a devastating grand slam delivered by Dustin Pedroia (the first of his career). Pedroia became the first Red Sox 2B to hit a grand slam against the Yankees in the last 50 years.

The Sox have won two straight against the Yanks, and with another victory Thursday, they can put them 8 games behind in the Wild Card race. Ouch.
