A day after former Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo earned the honor of Defensive Rookie of the Year. He garnered 49 of the 50 possible votes (Bengals LB Kieth Rivers earned the other vote).
Taken with the 10th selection in the 2008 draft out of Tennessee, Mayo became a force in an aging linebacker corps right away. Mayo led the Patriots with 137 tackles, and seemed to be all over the field on nearly every play.
Mayo is just the second Patriots player to win the award. Defensive back Mike Haynes won back in 1976.
