BU, Northeastern Tie Twice; Terriers Still Nation’s No. 1

Boston University and Northeastern settled nothing this weekend as they tied twice in two hard fought battles. The ties allowed Notre Dame to cut into BU’s lead, trimming it to 13 points in the latest USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Division I Men’s Hockey Poll. BU still owns 31 of the 50 first place tallies, with the Irish carrying the balance.

Michigan and the Huskies fell in line as the top four remained unchanged. Denver jumped three spots to fifth and Princeton climbed four to six. Miami, North Dakota, Vermont (which slipped three), and Cornell round out the top ten.

New Hampshire’s weekend sweep of Boston College helped them remain at twelve and bounced the Eagles from the poll for the first time this season as they continue to fade. UMass-Lowell continued its strong play, taking three of four points from Vermont, to grab the final spot, #20 in the poll.

In other Hockey East action, Massachusetts swept Maine in a pair of 4-3 contests and Merrimack took three of four points from Providence. Each team has a pair of series left as the season winds down. This weekend will feature Northeastern vs. UMass-Lowell and BU facing UMass as those four are among the Conference’s hottest right now. UNH will play Merrimack, Vermont meets Maine, and BC and Providence tangle in the other matches.

With the weekend split, Northeastern still owns a one point advantage over BU, 33-32 in the race for the league title and tournament #1 seed. New Hampshire caught Vermont for third as they each now have 28 points with UMass-Lowell just two points behind them. Massachusetts and BC are tied for sixth with 21 points and should be safe to make the conference tournament (top eight of the 10 qualify). Maine is warming the final spot in the dance with 17 points, four in front of Providence and six in front of Merrimack.
