It can get better. The Bruins, fresh off their fifth straight win to give them their first 50-win season since 1992-93, are zeroing in on the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. After beating the Senators 2-1 Thursday night, the B’s are amazingly one win or a Washington loss away from clinching the top spot in the East…and they didn’t even make the playoffs two years ago.
The Bruins got goals from Marc Savard and Milan Lucic, and 31 saves from Tim Thomas to win their fifth straight overall as they continue their strong push for the postseason.
Daniel Alfredsson scored his 24th goal to get the Senators on the board in the first. Milan Lucic responded with a goal of his own early in the second period, and Marc Savard scored the game-winner early in the third period to cap the scoring.
Former Bruins goalie Alex Auld finished with 31 saves in the loss.
Acheiving 50 wins is amazing, but remember that there are no more ties in the NHL. You can win and earn two points in regulation, overtime, and via the shootout. You can earn a loss in regulation, but you can earn a point with an OL in overtime or in a shootout. The rule changes have led to slightly inflated win totals, but the Bruins should still be commended for an unbelievable season thus far.
The Bruins go for East’s No. 1 seed Saturday afternoon against the Rangers.
