Canseco: 90% Sure Manny Used Steroids

Update (05/07/09): Canseco’s hunch was true…Manny Ramirez tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and was suspended 50 games.

With no Red Sox game today, Boston fans can turn their focus to Los Angeles. Why? Well, in front of a packed auditorium (some 50 spectators) on the campus of USC, former Red Sox slugger Jose Canseco talked about his life and baseball. In the open question-and-answer session, Canseco recently answered questions about steroids and current MLB players.

When asked about Alex Rodriguez, he called the Yankees slugger a “Canseco copycat” for using steroids and having a rendezvous with Madonna.

How about former Sox slugger and current Dodgers OF Manny Ramirez? Why did it take so long for Manny to be signed? “To Canseco, the drawn-out negotiation, the lack of a long-term deal, the lack of interest all raise red flags, and so he tells the Bovard crowd that Ramirez’s ‘name is most likely, 90%,’ on the list (of players who tested positive for PEDs in 2003),” said L.A. Times writer Kurt Streeter.

Reaction: Canseco admitted later he has no way of knowing if Manny actually took PED’s, but his accusation is enough to start the smoke. Where there’s smoke, usually there’s fire.

Do I think Manny Ramirez took performance-enhancing drugs? I sure hope not. But, I didn’t think A-Rod did either. I know believe that where there’s smoke with this steroids mess, there’s usually fire. The only smoke so far was raised by Canseco, who for the most part has proved credible on the steroids issue.

I can’t wait for Manny’s response.
