Justin Masterson Bullpen Bound

According to a Boston.com story, Justin Masterson looks to be headed to the bullpen with the impending return of Daisuke Matsuzaka this week. After his outing against the Mariners, Fracona said:

“He was good,” manager Terry Francona said. “He made some pitches. He kept his pitch count down where we could manage the bullpen. I thought his ball had pretty good life. He made a couple mistakes and he paid for those, but you get into the seventh inning, give up a couple runs, that’s a pretty good performance.”

Masterson is willing to handle whatever role the team gives him, as he spoke about Dice-K’s return:

“By no means is whatever takes place a demotion,” Masterson said. “This is a case of a guy coming back to reclaim what he already had, which is understandable. If that takes place, I’ll go help bolster even more what is already a strong bullpen. Whatever takes place, I just want to keep pitching well in whatever role I’m in.”

If things go as expected, Masterson will join the AL’s second-best bullpen, with 122 IP, a 3.02 ERA, and a .238 average against.
