Chiarelli, Julien Win Sporting News Awards

Sporting News has named Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli the NHL’s Executive of the Year. On Tuesday they named coach Claude Julien the Coach of the Year.

Over the last year, Chiarelli signed Michael Ryder to a 3-year, $12 million deal in the off-season and traded for Steve Montador and Mark Recchi at the trade deadline. Ryder finished with 27 goals and 26 assists (53 points) in a highly successful 2008-09 season.

The Bruins have improved from 13th in the Eastern Conference two years ago, to 8th in the conference in 2007-08, to 1st in the Eastern Conference in 2008-09, which is testament to the hard work of Chiarelli and Julien. Well done!
