The Maine Red Claws took another step towards completing their organizational staff by naming Austin Ainge as their first head basketball coach. The new NBA D-League team in Portland, Maine has a mascot, a new parquet floor, two NBA team affiliates and now a head coach.
Ainge, 27, is the son of Celtics GM Danny Ainge. Before you go thinking it’s all a family thing, realize that Ainge has been groomed for this job and has basketball experience. After playing college ball at BYU, Ainge was an assistant at Utah and last year was a scout for the Celtics, where he worked frequently with rookies J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker when they were playing in the D-League.
The Red Claws have already created buzz here in the Portland area, having sold nearly 1,000 season tickets and instituted many upgrades to the facility they will be playing in.
