Brought in to protect a three-run lead in the top of the ninth, Jonathan Papelbon gave up three hits, a walk and the lead. Manny Delcarmen surrendered two runs in the top of the eleventh inning, and took the loss, as the visiting Oakland A’s defeated Boston 9-8. All told, the Sox bullpen gave up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Sox offense, lead by Kevin Youkilis and J.D. Drew with three hits each, scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead, but scored only twice in five innings against five Oakland relievers.

Clay Buchholz, the subject of repeated trade rumors, gave up only two runs, despite giving up nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Notes

  • The Red Sox retired Jim Rice’s number 14 in a pre-game ceremony
  • Shortstop Nick Green made two throwing errors in the ninth inning
  • A’s manager Bob Geren was tossed in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes.
