After days of speculation and with just minutes to spare, Boston.com reports that the Cleveland Indians have finally traded All-Star catcher Victor Martinez to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitchers Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone, and Bryan Price.
Right after that, the Sox dealt newly acquired 1B Adam LaRoche to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for 1B Casey Kotchman. LaRoche returns to his former team and Kotchman return to the A.L. where he was a former member of the Angels.
Martinez is enjoying another solid season by hitting .284 with 15 HR and 67 RBI. Cleveland is currently sitting on a 42-60 record and are 12.0 games back in the A.L. Central and are in desperate need to trim down their payroll. The Indians have $33 million wrapped up next season in three players (Jake Westbrook, Travis Hafner, and Kerry Wood) and had to move Martinez and his $7 million contract.
My Take: This is great news. The Sox get another solid offensive player and didn’t have to give up Clay Buchholz, Lars Anderson, or any other one of our big name prospects. Theo has done it again!

Theo is masterful. I like Justin Masterson…but he’s expendable when it comes to Victor Martinez. I wonder where Victor will fit?
Martinez will play 1B,C, and DH. This was a good trade as it takes some pressure off Ortiz and gives them a successor to Varitek.
