Update, (8/12/09): Kevin Youkilis suspended five games.
Red Sox 1B/3B Kevin Youkilis was ejected from tonight’s game against the Tigers for charging the mound after being hit by a pitch from Detroit’s Rick Porcello. Both benches cleared and when the dust settled, Youkilis and Porcello were sent to the showers.
Porcello most likely hit Youkilis in retaliation for Sox starter Junichi Tazawa hitting Tigers’ slugger Miguel Cabrera on the hand in the first inning. Cabrera would leave the game due to injury during his next at-bat in the second inning.
Porcello tried to hit 1B Victor Martinez in the bottom of the first, but missed. Feeling like justice had not been served, he then hit Youkilis who led off the bottom of the 2nd. Hopefully this is the last batter hit in tongiht’s game.
