Red Sox Acquire Alex Gonzalez

Alex Gonzalez

The Red Sox acquired SS Alex Gonzalez from the Cincinnati Reds Friday. Gonzalez cleared waivers and the Red Sox were said to have been actively pursuing him. The Sox swapped minor league infielder Kris Negron for the veteran shortstop.

To make room for Gonzalez, the team will likely release INF Chris Woodward, who was recently picked up to help out the team in its middle infield positions.

Gonzalez comes to the Red Sox with excellent defense, as fans may remember when he played for the team in 2006. He also comes with a $6 million option for 2010, so he is under Boston’s control for another year.
