2009-2010 NHL Pick ‘Em: Who’s Going to the Playoffs?

Nine of SoB’s finest will compete in the first annual NHL Pick ‘Em, which joins a long successful string of NFL, NBA, and MLB Pick ‘Ems. I will admit, my NHL knowledge isn’t up to snuff when compared to my knowledge of the other three major sports, but if there’s a game I can compete in, I’ll be there!

The Bruins are coming off a very successful 2008-2009 campaign, and none of the staffers expect the Bruins to falter much, even considering the the Phil Kessel trade. Few of us expect the Canadiens to make the playoffs, in part because they had such a large roster overhaul, and because, well…they’re the Canadiens.

The Rules

Picking the division champions correctly will earn a player two points. Note: The three division champs in each conference are seeded 1-3 in each conference, followed by the rest of the teams in order of record (point total).
If a player chooses a team to win the division, but they don’t and still make the playoffs, that’s worth one point.
Players then picked teams for the rest of the playoffs in each conference. Doing so correctly will earn the player one point.
If a player chooses a team to make the playoffs but not win the division…and that team wins their division, that is still worth one point.
Teams picked to make the playoffs that actually miss the playoffs are worth zero points.

Earning Extra Credit

Competitors will receive extra credit for predicting teams to finish in exact playoff seeds. What does that mean?

So, if a player selected the Bruins to be the top seed, and they finish as the top seed, he/she will be awarded eight extra points.
If a player chooses the Penguins to be the No. 2 seed, and they finish as the No. 2 seed, he/she will be awarded seven extra points.
Likewise, if a player chooses the Canadiens to be the eighth seed, and they are the eighth seed, he/she will be awarded one extra point.
If a player chooses the Bruins to be the top seed, and they end up as the No. 2 or No. 3 seed (or worse), then he/she receives no extra credit. The extra credit only applies if the team appears in the exact chosen spot.
Players can earn a maximum of 72 extra points (36 per conference), and a maximum of 94 points overall.

It’s actually 94 total points

2*([3*2]+[5*1]+[1+2+...+8])=
2*(6+5+36)=
2*47=
94

Yeahhh I’m not sure where I came up with the five extra points. Either way, there’s no way in hell anyone gets that many points.

There’s a reason I wasn’t a math major I guess!

Well, if you used to work for Enron you can always come up with a few extra points from SOMEwhere.

And next time you want Jennifer Anniston to tally points for you make sure she’s not distracted by the loss of a love life (mmm… inside joke).
