Byrd in Playoffs Bullpen, Delcarmen Out

Seen by many as a temporary fill-in to help the Red Sox play out their schedule, Paul Byrd will be added to Boston’s ALDS roster. As a result, reliever Manny Delcarmen will be left off the roster, much to the delight of SoB’s David R. Phelps.

Delcarmen started the year with 13 scoreless innings in April, but really struggled down the stretch, finishing with a 5.25 ERA in August and a 14.14 ERA in September. After allowing just one home run the first five months of the year, Delcarmen gave up four of them in September.

Still suffering the effects of a car accident last weekend, Delcarman will be inactive at least for the first round.

“I just think all that’s happened, it’s probably not in his best interest,” manager Terry Francona said. “It would probably be rushing it a little bit.”

The final postseason roster is set to be released later Thursday morning.
