Patriots Release Tully Banta-Cain

It’s moves like this that make even the most loyal Patriots fan wonder what goes through Bill Belichick’s mind. The Patriots released Tully Banta-Cain today, who was tied for the team lead with three sacks.

It’s possible this is just a temporary move but it’s still bizarre to see a productive member of the defense have his contract terminated. With Adalius Thomas getting benched yesterday there’s still a lot of question marks at the OLB position.

Banta-Cain is a seven year veteran who returned to the Patriots this season after a dismal few seasons in San Francisco.

  2. If I had to guess…he may have made the move to free up some cap space ahead of the trade deadline in case he wants/needs to make a move. Then, he could probably sign Banta-Cain back for less money. But, that’s just a guess.
