Minutemen Bounce Back With Strong Win Over Northeastern

UMass defense shuts down the Huskies

A week after suffering a tough loss to the Richmond Spiders, Tony Nelson and UMass had a strong game against in-state opponent Northeastern. The 37-7 victory gives the Minutemen an undefeated record at home this season at 5-0.

Nelson, Offense Dominate

Tony Nelson finished with 116 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Nelson scored twice from the one yard line and once from nine yards out. Redshirt freshman Cedric Gonnett also saw some time and had 58 yards on the ground.

Kyle Havens hit 15 of his 21 pass attempts for 187 yards and one touchdown pass, finding Victor Cruz for an 11-yard touchdown pass to close out the first half. Cruz finished with five catches for 88 yards and a score. Armando Cuko set a school record for field goals made in a season, as he added three more in the victory.

Defense shuts down Huskies

UMass held the Huskies to 145 yards of total offense. Mike Mele led the team with 10 total tackles and Brandon Collier added the only sack of the game for a loss of seven yards. The defense was not responsible for the seven points that the Huskies had. Scott Woodward threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

UMass hosts their final home game next week when James Madison visits next Saturday.
