Boston Bruins Sign Veteran Left Wing Satan

On Saturday, the Boston Bruins signed veteran left winger Miroslav Satan to a one-year pro-rated contract that includes a no-movement clause worth $700,000, pending a physical examination. Satan, who was just named to the Slovakian Olympic team for the Vancouver Games in February, will only earn cost the Bruins $350,000 because the team’s season is already half-over.

Satan (pronounced SHUH-tan – sorry to disappoint those who were excited to hear Jack Edwards scream “SATAN!”), scored 17 goals in addition to his 19 assists as he helped the Pittsburgh Penguins their first Stanley Cup since 1992. However, he was unsuccessful in the free agent market, even with his veteran talent: 354 goals and 367 assists in 1,012 regular season games. In his fourteen-year career that has sent him from the Edmonton Oilers to the Buffalo Sabres, the New York Islanders, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, he has notched more than 60 points six times, including an 75-point effort in 2002-2003 and a 40-goal season in 1998-1999, both with the Sabres.

Despite his declining productivity, the good friend of countryman and fellow Olympian Zdeno Chara has the opportunity to boast the Bruins’ offense, which currently ranks third-worst in the National Hockey League. (That’s 28th-best for anyone who sees the glass half-full.)

”We were fortunate to get him and that he wanted to come to Boston and we are going to take advantage of that opportunity. Hopefully, he gives us that added scoring that we have been looking for,” Bruins head coach Claude Julien told nhl.com.

The Bruins have not officially announced the signing as Satan is still yet to pass the physical, which is expected to take place Sunday. Assuming the contract is finalized, he will join the team in 7-10 days, and most likely play alongside Marc Savard on the first line. Upon Milan Lucic’s return to the line-up, Julien will certainly have to shuffle the lines, but the added competition for playing time will hopefully motivate the Bruins offense into scoring.
