Bruins Clinch Playoff Spot With Odd Win Over Hurricanes

Bruins Celebrate (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)

The Bruins have a lot of trouble scoring goals on the power play, and it gets even worse at even strength. They continued to struggle in both departments during Saturday’s 4-2 win against the Hurricanes. When Matt Hunwick headed back to the penalty box to start the second period, he told teammates to kill the penalty for him. They did more then killed it, they simply annhilated it.

The B’s scored three shorthanded goals in 64 seconds during the same two-minute penalty in the second period (Yes, that phrase deserved to be bolded). Daniel Paille, Blake Wheeler, Steve Begin were the goalscorers. Maybe the Bruins should commit more penalties?

With the wild victory, the Bruins clinched at least the No. 6 or No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference, which means they don’t have to face getting swept at the hands of the Washington Capitals, who are clearly one of the best teams over the last decade. Instead, they’ll likely match up against the Devils or Sabres in the first round of the playoffs.

Carolina did what they could to battle back in Saturday’s game, scoring two goals in the second after the embarrassment to start the period. Erik Cole and Pat Dwyer beat Tuukka Rask, but Rask remained hot in goal overall, stopping 33 shots.

Milan Lucic clinched the win with his empty-netter with a minute to go in the game.

The Bruins wrap-up the wild 2009-2010 season against the Capitals on Sunday.
