Video: Menino at Bobby Orr Ceremony – “Varitek” Splits the Uprights?

Leave it to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to mess up what was otherwise a nice moment outside the TD Garden on Monday. At a ceremony revealing a statue of Bobby Orr on the 40th anniversary of “The Goal” (Orr’s dive after scoring the game-winning goal in the 1970 Stanley Cup), Menino spoke of other great moments in Boston sports history.

β€œIn Boston, we have an amazing set of remarkable athletes whose actions have become ionic (sic) in sports,” Menino said. β€œHavlicek stole the ball, Fisk waiving the ball fair, Flutie launching the Hail Mary pass, Varitek splitting the uprights.”

The quote doesn’t do it justice.
