Leave it to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to mess up what was otherwise a nice moment outside the TD Garden on Monday. At a ceremony revealing a statue of Bobby Orr on the 40th anniversary of “The Goal” (Orr’s dive after scoring the game-winning goal in the 1970 Stanley Cup), Menino spoke of other great moments in Boston sports history.
“In Boston, we have an amazing set of remarkable athletes whose actions have become ionic (sic) in sports,” Menino said. “Havlicek stole the ball, Fisk waiving the ball fair, Flutie launching the Hail Mary pass, Varitek splitting the uprights.”
The quote doesn’t do it justice.
