Kevin Youkilis Placed on Disabled List

Kevin Youkilis

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, the baseball gods throw us another curveball.

Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis was placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday afternoon with a muscle tear in his right thumb. Initially, the injury was thought to be just a sprain, but after Youkilis visited a specialist on Tuesday the injury was determined to be much worse. Potential season-ending surgery hasn’t been ruled out, but manager Terry Francona hopes rest will cure Youkilis.

“If he has to have surgery now, it’s certainly fixable” – Terry Francona

As a result, Mike Lowell will be activated and is slated to play 1B tonight against Cleveland. Lowell has been tearing it up in Pawtucket, hitting .500 with 4 HR and 10 RBI in 5 games.

Youkilis joins a stellar Sox cast on the DL which includes: Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, and Jason Varitek.
