If the Playoffs Started Today – MLB Week 22

Phillies vs Yankees: Week 22's prediction for the World Series

We’re now officially into the last month of the season. The only division still definitely in question is the AL East, with the AL West also having a decent amount of competition left. Things are starting to become more about gaining postseason momentum than clawing for a spot, though don’t tell that to some of the lesser teams. Only four have been mathematically eliminated from divisional contention thus far. Arizona continues to be the surprise team heading into the postseason, but how far will they go? Which teams will make it in? Let’s look at what would happen if the playoffs started as of Monday, September 5, before the day’s games:

National League

#1 Philadelphia Phillies vs #3 Arizona Diamondbacks

The D-Backs followed up their losing streak by winning 10 of 11. Though they haven’t been facing the best of teams lately. Philadelphia may have lost two in a row to Florida, but they’re still a muscular 88-48. They still have the bats, they still have the pitching, so as long as their bullpen doesn’t blow things, they’ll be fine.

#2 Milwaukee Brewers vs #W Atlanta Braves

Milwaukee was actually swept at home by the Cardinals, but got back on track nicely with a sweep of their own in Houston. They can still put up nice performances, while Atlanta has been a .500 team lately. Milwaukee should still pull things out.

American League

#1 New York Yankees vs #3 Detroit Tigers

The Tigers have won three in a row, but the Yankees have won four. Though Bartolo Colon still can’t get a win to save his life. If the offense can give him a bit more support, and the starting rotation settles in, Detroit’s batters and Verlander won’t be enough.

#2 Texas Rangers vs #W Boston Red Sox

Here we are again. After seemingly solving Texas, Boston has once again ran into trouble. Their offense has become stymied and unpredictable once again against Texas. The bats will need to become more stable and constantly productive, because you know Texas’ will be. Otherwise, Texas will move right through to the next round.

What Might Change Next Week:

  • It actually looks like the standings are set up to continue for another week.
