Like him or not, John Lackey has been really bad this season. How bad? He’s sporting an ERA of 6.41 over 160.0 innings, the worst ERA in the bigs this season by more than .5 runs (min. 100 innings).
Could we now have a reason for his horrendous season? Earlier this season, we found out about John Lackey’s wife Krista is battling breast cancer. Then, Monday morning, TMZ.com reported that Lackey filed for divorce from his wife.
Lackey and Krista, who had a prenup, have been married since 2008 and do not have a child together. According to the court documents filed in Texas, Lackey said “the marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.”
TMZ reported Lackey’s wife underwent a double mastectomy in March and chemotherapy as late as June.
Before his start Sunday night, Lackey said he received a text message from someone discussing “something personal” and after the game, he lashed out at the media, who for the most part, had no idea about the TMZ report published a few hours later.

For what it’s worth, the Red Sox released a statement about Lackey’s divorce:
“John Lackey is dealing with a deeply personal family issue, and it is one the Red Sox do not feel is appropriate for public debate. The Red Sox request that John and Krista’s privacy be respected.”
What do you think of what happened?
