Connelly’s Top Ten: Patriots Bend & Break, But Win

1. Patriots:

Patriots beat the Colts 31-24.

OFFENSE

* Can someone in power tell Tom Brady to stop running
* On the punt Julian Edelman fumbled, he was going to hand off for a reverse to Stevan Ridley
* Interesting watching Tom Brady studying on the sideline, calling Chad Ochocinco over to discuss and then throwing to him first play down the sideline
* Believe it or not, I saw Tom Brady ask the crowd to quiet down once
* Brady connected with seven receivers after last week’s four, including Ochocinco and Tiquan Underwood
* Tom Brady is the greatest two-minute quarterback of all-time
* Rob Gronkowski mixed it up: First touchdown a below average spike, second touchdown threw it off the wall (NFL will ban that in off season), third touchdown he thought he had the tight end TD receiving TD record and kept the ball

DEFENSE

* Crazy but your number two, three and four tacklers on Sunday were – Nate Jones (9), Matthew Slater (7) and Niko Koutouvides (7)
* Jerod Mayo’s best energy in two years – amazing interception
* Devin McCourty will be starting at safety next year (Pierre Garcon had 150 yards on him)
* Really… 113.2 quarterback rating for Dan “F-ing” Orlovsky?
* Defense allowed the following three drives: 19 plays (10:19), 15 plays (8:49), 11 plays (4:15)

OTHER

* CBS kept the streak alive of showing Bob Kraft and mentioning Myra’s passing (mention a phone number for her favorite charity instead)
* At some point before taking the head coaching job of the Colts, did someone dear Jim Caldwell with “Chinese School has just begun….”
* The Patriots cheerleaders have resorted to holding up letters that spell out L-O-U-D to help the crowd understand their responsibility
* It’s incredible the run of good weather the Patriots have had for home games over the last ten years

2. Around the NFL:

* Watching Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte rolling around the ground looked like Gale Sayers
* Tim Tebow magical again with some great throws – how about his 10 TD to 1 INT stat?
* The Patriots could give up 35 to Pittsburgh’s wide receivers in the playoffs at Heinz Field
* Only Oakland and Denver have given up more points than scored this year and have a winning record
* Did you see Richard Seymour get ejected Sunday for throwing a punch? He’s got some anger issues…
* Mark Sanchez is clutch – I’ll give him that
* Great Giants and Packers game – Mercury Morris threw up again

3. Around College Football:

My picks this weekend:

  • I said 17 point underdog Southern Miss would beat Houston – they did
  • I said LSU would win by at least 25 – they won by 32
  • I said Oklahoma State would win by at least 10 – they won by 34
  • I said Baylor would win by at least 14 over Texas – they won by 24
  • I said 12-point underdog Iowa State would upset Kansas State – they lost the ball driving for the win in 7-point loss
  • I was wrong about Virginia Tech – Clemson

* Back to Boston College’s lack of PR – Congratulations to Luke KuechIy on winning the Butkus award – I never received one item on Kuechly from BC – but had an email from Oklahoma State at 1:06 AM this morning after their game stating why they should be in the BCS championship (5-0 against Top 25 teams / Alabama 2-1)
* Back to Boston College’s lack of PR – I contacted the school newspaper’s editor and head of sports at the Heights just curious if there is any plan on pushing their athletes – they never got back to me
* My Heisman vote: 1. Robert Griffin III (didn’t like his self promotion after the game), 2. Andrew Luck, 3. Trent Richardson, 4. Matt Barkley, 5. Russell Wilson, 6. Tyran Mathieu
* Nine of Kansas State twelve games has had a point differential of seven points or less in their 10-2 season

4. Tiger is back!

* Certainly not a good person – but to have Tiger in the mix on Sunday is special
* First win in over two years (Jack Nicklaus is sitting pretty with his 18 majors)
* 83rd victory
* Fist pump is iconic sports image

5. Boston College basketball:

The BC men’s b-ball team has now lost to the following schools over the last four years:

* Harvard – three times
* Rhode Island – twice
* Holy Cross – once
* Boston University – once
* Yale – once
* U Mass – once
* Maine – once

6. High School Super Bowls:

* Everett High School’s record against teams that participated in the postseason – 6-0 (wins over Barnstable, BC High, Lincoln Sudbury, Lynn English, Central in Springfield, Leominster)
* How about Mashpee’s Jared Taylor – 306 yards on 26 carries
* Ironically – Everett quarterback Jonathan DiBiaso, who set the touchdown pass record with 103 for his career, didn’t throw one in the Super Bowl victory over Lincoln Sudbury

7. Amazing Stats:

How about some Bruins stuff?

* Bruins are on pace to win 55 games – they won 46 last year
* Over the last 47 games (including playoffs) Chris Kelly has 15 goals
* Over the last two years, Tim Thomas is 47-15-9 during regular season

8. Old School:

Interesting piece in the Boston Globe that Cam Newton had no idea who Steve Grogan was, considering he was the quarterback that held rushing TD record that the college cheater broke on Sunday.

Facts from that great 1976 season of Grogan:

* Twelve touchdowns in 13 games (didn’t score in first game)
* Had rushing games of 103 yards, 76 yards and 56 yards (finished with 397 yards)
* In the team’s three losses – Grogan threw 1 touchdown and 10 interceptions

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Top Christmas shows, per the Globe

  1. Its a Wonderful Life
  2. The Christmas Story
  3. Elf
  4. Christmas Vacationing
  5. Love Actually (really??)
  6. A Charlie Brown Christmas
  7. White Christmas
  8. Home Alone
  9. Christmas Carol (Alastair Sim)
  10. Miracle on 34th Street

10. Randomocity:

* Why hasn’t Robert Downey Jr, with his acting ability, taken the Edward Norton step to greatness?
* Tim Wakefield says he wants one more year. That would be another year of forcing people in the Monster Seats to sign releases
* Manny wants back – he’ll be taking his urine tests inside the Green Monster
* Is the music in Charlie Brown Christmas special the most haunting and depressing soundtrack of all time?
* Baylor football wins 9 games and has a Heisman hopeful and their two basketball teams are a combined 15-0

  1. I was at the BU/BC basketball game on Saturday backing BU. BC fans are non-existent. Conte was empty. You also can’t have 10 white guys on the roster and not be named Duke and expect to win. They were outhustled, outrebounded, outshot, outeverything.

    REPLY – MPC – Take away hockey from the Heights its embarrassing

  2. Tebow continues to roll. He could have won it with a touchdown pass that was a beautifully thrown ball into the endzone, but the receiver dropped it.

    I agree with Robert Griffin III winning the Heisman – he’s unreal.

    It’s a shame that West Virginia is in the BCS and Boise State loses by missing a field goal to a ranked team and will go to a no-name bowl.

    REPLY – MPC – The thing Tebow haters don’t realize that he is only going to get more comfortable with his throwing and reading defenses / BCS is a disgrace – West Virginia terrible – as Game Day was saying come right out next year with a four team semi’s and then adjust that / RGIII is a first ten pick – he’s tough also – needs to learn how to roll to his left though

  3. Just wondering, how many MVP votes will Tebow get?

    REPLY – MPC – If he wins three of last four and one playoff game (votes probably in already though) – he’s in top 15
