The Bruins once again started the game slow getting down three goals in the first period. Tim Thomas didn’t look sharp again playing in back to back days. Marty Turco made his Bruins debut in relief of Thomas and played well considering the situation. Injuries continue to hurt the Bruins, Adam McQuaid, Max Sauve, and Patrice Bergeron all were injured and did not return fully. Final score Pittsburgh 5 Boston 2.
The injuries to McQuaid and Sauve shouldn’t be too bad for the Bruins. With two defensemen scratched today, McQuaid will be missed if he is going to be out, but there are players available to step into his spot. Sauve was playing in only his first NHL game and wasn’t expect to play a big role.
The scariest thing for Bruins fans today was the injury to Bergeron. He took a shot to the knee area and couldn’t put much weight on that skate. Bergeron returned to the bench and took one more shift but soon returned to the locker room. If there is any forward on this team that the Bruins can’t afford to lose for any period of time its Bergeron.
David Krejci scored both Bruins goals today; Tyler Seguin and Milan Lucic assisted the two goals. Every time this line is out on the ice they seem to be getting chances. Twelve out of the 36 shots for the Bruins came from the top trio.
There simply needs to be more goal scoring coming from the rest of the line up for this team to be successful. If Bergeron misses any time the Bruins are going to struggle to find some secondary scoring.
With Thomas giving up three goals in the first period there was no way he was going to be on the ice in the second period. Turco was pretty comfortable for being thrust into a game like this. Only seeing two pucks get past him making 20 saves.
Turco is most comfortable playing the puck, something that Thomas can struggle with at times.
Defensively the Bruins were not good today and they need to be better along with Thomas. Pittsburgh showed why they are serious cup contenders today even without Sidney Crosby (who is getting set to return).
