Connelly’s Top Ten: Did Bobby Valentine Build Fenway or Invent the Wrap First?

Bobby Valentine (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)

1. Bruins:

* The following Bruins haven’t scored in four games: Marchand, Bergeron, Lucic, Seguin, Krecji (0 goals / 48 shots)
* I Like Andy Brickley pointing out Marchand has to pick it up – Rem-Dog hasn’t done that in five years
* Shawn Thornton can put the puck on net from crazy angles
* Patrice Bergeron is the best two-way Bruin since Steve Kasper
* Alexander Ovechkin is getting under Tyler Seguin’s skin
* Dennis Wideman was never this fiesty with Bruins
* Shouldn’t Peverley score 30 goals a season with his speed and stick skills
* Washington goalie Braden Holtby is way too comfortable – Bruins need to take a two-minute penalty getting in his grill

2. Around baseball:

* If a pro franchise leaves a city it shouldn’t be allowed to get another program: ie. Washington Nationals, in first place, had a crowd of 14,520 Wednesday
* Top 20 Division II teams from New England: 12. Southern New Hampshire / 16. Lemoyne
* Top 20 Division III teams from New England: 6. Wheaton / 15. Eastern Connecticut / 17. St. Josephs
* Marco Scutaro is hitting .225

3. Rajon Rondo:

Rondo is averaging 14.1 assists a game in April.

4. Red Sox I wouldn’t invite to the 100th party:

* Carl Everett
* Manny Ramirez
* Roger Clemens
* Ugie Urbina
* Josh Beckett
* Jeff Russell
* Bobby Valentine
* Manny Alexander
* Doug Mirabelli
* Wil Cordero
* Jose Canseco
* Mike Torrez
* Izzy Alacantra
* Mike Lansing
* Wes Gardner
* Jeremy Giambi
* Paxton Crawford

5. Top Ten color analysts in local sports history:

* Tom Heinsohn
* Bob Cousy
* Gino Cappelletti
* Jerry Remy with Sean McDonough
* Johnny Bucyk
* Bob Beers
* Ken Harrelson

6. More Hockey:

Dale Hunter (Current Capitals coach) accumulated 729 penalty minutes in 186 playoff games / Jean Ratelle accumulated 24 penalty minutes in 123 games

7. Jose Iglesias:

Even though Jose Iglesias isn’t hitting at Pawtucket, keep in mind that in Hanley Ramirez’s last 588 at bats in the minor leagues before the bigs, he hit .265

8. Amazing Stat:

The Top Five in the NHL Plus/Minus:

1. Patrice Bergeron – 37
2. Tyler Seguin – 34
3. Zdeno Chara – 33
3. Chris Kelly – 33
5. Brad Marchand -31

9. Just A Little Bit Outside:

Of the Top 200 Grossing Movies that also won the Oscar for best movie:

2. Titanic – $600mm
14. Lord of the Rings – Return of the King – $377mm
24. Forest Gump – $329mm
119. Gone With the Wind – $198mm
131. Gladiator – $187mm
136. Dances With Wolves – $184mm
176. A Beautiful Mind – $170mm
177. Chicago – $170mm
192. Sound of Music – $163mm

10. Randomocity:

* I liked the HBO movie Special Relationship on Bill Clinton and Tony Blair – was slanted Blair’s way, but interesting
* Game Change on Sarah Palin was fictional – embellishment
* Give credit to Dick Clark for not hiding from the results of stroke – I loved American Bandstand
* Is that Charles Barkley or Venus Williams doing the diet commercials? And by the way, did they have to do the commercial on a day Barkley had a cold?

  1. Iglesias is still young enough to improve, but he has a long way to go. His career minor league OPS is .615! Ouch. Hanley Ramirez at the same age had a career minor league OPS of .785, and he was starting in the majors. I don’t think Iglesias will ever hit enough to hold down a big league job.

  2. Any interest in a Bobby Valentine prediction when he will resign/be fired as the Red Sox manager?

    REPLY – MPC – I’m worried about his well being at this point

  3. #5. I liked Derek Sanderson as a color guy. His keys to the game were classic…”the Bruins need to outscore the opponent.”

    REPLY – Absoultely thats a miss by me

    Bergeron best two-way Bruins player since Adam Oates.. Oates was always under estimated but in addition to putting up 100+ points a season he was superb at faceoffs and penalty killing

    REPLY – MPC – I agree with your points but was he that good deep in his own zone -don’t remember
