Boston Celtics 2012 Draft Targets: Doron Lamb

Doron Lamb: 20 years old, 6’5″; 199 lbs

School: Kentucky

Position: Shooting Guard

Doron Lamb is one of the rare players who actually played for more than one season under John Calipari at Kentucky. After winning a national championship and being named to the All-SEC second team, Lamb decided to enter the NBA draft. Lamb is a versatile scorer with a deadly jump shot. This past season Lamb averaged 13.7 points and shot 47% field from the field.

He is a big time scorer with a smooth game. Lamb doesn’t have the greatest size, but makes up for it with hustle and agility.

Does he fit the Celtics?

Yes. Ray Allen has one foot out the door and Avery Bradley will step in as the Celtics’ starting shooting guard, but there is a huge hole on the bench. Not only would Lamb thrive coming off the bench, but he would give the Celtics a knock down shooter to replace a portion of Allen’s contributions. Lamb came off the bench on occasion and thrived in that role while at Kentucky, so he should be able to adapt to that role in the pros.

Odds Lamb is in Celtics green next season: 40%

Right now Lamb is a hard prospect to gauge and I have seen him projected anywhere from mid-first round to early second. I believe that Lamb will be there when the Celtics pick in the first round, but my question is could they snatch him in the second round? Right now the Celtics pick 51st in the second round, but it’s conceivable that they trade up to grab Lamb earlier in that round.

Final Thoughts:

I like Doron Lamb. He’s a knock down shooter and a team player. He showed at Kentucky that he isn’t afraid to take the big shot. He is a bit undersized and needs to add strength, but that should come as he matures. Lamb’s NBA career looks to fit in somewhere between Randy Foye and Kevin Martin.  If Boston drafted Lamb, he would fill a need right away and may be able to blossom into something more.
