The Red Sox are in free fall, there’s no denying it anymore. The best pitcher on the staff of late has been Clay Buchholz, and not even he could stop the bleeding as Boston fell to the visiting Los Angeles Angels 7-3. The team has lost three straight, dropping to 59-65 on the season.
Buchholz (11-4) couldn’t find his way out of the sixth inning, getting hit hard for the first time since early in the year. He allowed 12 hits and seven earned runs, including a solo home run to Howie Kendrick in the sixth inning. Every Angels hitter in the starting lineup had a hit except for Kendrys Morales. First baseman Albert Pujols was 2-2, but as he scored a run the superstar appeared to limp off the field, departing from action altogether. His injury is being described as right calf tightness.
Not much went right for the Red Sox on either side of the ball. Batting leadoff, Scott Podsednik led the team with three hits, raising his limited action batting average all the way up to .370 on the season. Junichi Tazawa continued his 2012 success, throwing 2.2 innings of relief without allowing an earned run, holding an impressive 1.44 ERA in 25.0 innings of work. But that’s the reality of the Red Sox these days, drawing positives from losses in the forms of relievers and journeyman outfielders.
Jered Weaver kept up his run at a potential Cy Young award this year with a strong start to earn his 16th victory. Weaver (16-3) pitched seven strong, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five Boston batters. The bottom of the Angels order did the most damage, as hitters 5-9 were 10-16 with six runs scored.
On Thursday night the Red Sox will attempt to avoid a damaging sweep at the hands of the Angels. They will need a strong outing from Franklin Morales, while Los Angeles counters with C.J. Wilson in a battle of southpaws.
