Gonzalez is due just under $5 million for the remainder of this season, and over $20 million per year for the remainder of his contract. Beckett is owed around $4 million for the remainder of this season, and just over $15 million through 2014.
If no teams claim either of the two players (unlikely, given their salaries), the Red Sox would be able to trade both players as if the trade deadline had never passed.
Surrounding the trade deadline, rumors surfaced that the Red Sox were entertaining offers for Beckett, and that a deal was nearly in place with the Texas Rangers. Sometime during the summer, the Dodgers reportedly inquired about Gonzalez.
This move by the Red Sox is nothing that should be surprising. The Sox placed slugger Manny Ramirez on waivers multiple times during his time in Boston, and also placed Carl Crawford on waivers earlier this season.
Clearly, the Red Sox have now begun to waive the white flag, to accept that the playoffs are out of reach, and hopefully to realize that the current mix of players is nothing short of poisonous.
Gonzalez, while quiet, has fallen into the same bad habits as some of his teammates. It started last season, when he blamed God for the Red Sox September collapse. It continued this season when a text message from his phone ignited a firestorm of reports that he and his teammates were bargaining to have their manager, Bobby Valentine, fired.
Beckett’s missteps have been more obvious. Whether it be his abysmal September performance or his injury ridden golf outing, Beckett has long been on the wrong end of the Fenway Faithful’s passion.
It appears as if the Red Sox are at least signaling to their fans that while moving Beckett and Gonzalez is unlikely, they do recognize some of the problems they have had. They may have recognized it 11 months too late, but better late than never.
