Hernandez Leaves Game with Right Ankle Injury

New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez left Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals in the first quarter with an apparent injury to his right ankle. His return is questionable.

In the type of play no one likes to see, Julian Edelman was tackled by the Cardinals’ William Gay and the two players rolled up on Hernandez’s right leg as he was trying to block. Hernandez didn’t get up for a number of minutes before being helped off the field and straight to the Patriots locker room to be examined.

Hernandez just signed a lucrative new contract extension before the start of the 2012-13 season for five years, $40 million.

UPDATE: According to a report by the Boston Globe’s Shalise Young (via WEEI), x-rays came back negative, a somewhat positive sign in getting Hernandez back as soon as possible.
