WWE Night of Champions Comes to Boston

John Cena and CM Punk confront each other on Monday Night Raw in Montreal on Monday, September 10 2012. (wwe.com)

This Sunday, the TD Garden in downtown Boston will play host to WWE’s annual Night of Champions pay-per-view, the only night of the year when every championship is on the line. The evening will be highlighted by local superstar John Cena (of West Newbury, MA) challenging for the WWE Championship against incumbent champion CM Punk.

Of course, everyone will be distracted by the unfortunate recent events surrounding popular announcer Jerry “The King” Lawler. While commentating this past Monday night in Montreal, Lawler collapsed at the announcer’s table and was taken to an area hospital. Lawler, who just moments earlier had teamed with Randy Orton to defeat Punk and Dolph Ziggler, suffered a heart attack, but was quickly stabilized by medical personnel and should recover nicely. Once the situation was ascertained, commentary was ceased for the night in Lawler’s honor, except for periodic updates.

But as they say, and as “The King” would want, the show must go on. As mentioned before, local superstar John Cena will contend for the WWE Championship currently held by CM Punk. The match will take place in Cena’s home city of Boston. But two weeks ago on Raw in Punk’s home city of Chicago, Punk attacked Cena from behind during Cena’s falls count anywhere match with Alberto Del Rio, costing Cena the match. This past week on Raw in Montreal, Cena and Punk got into it again. However, WWE legend Bret “The Hitman” Hart was in Montreal for the first time in 15 years (since the incident colloquially known as the “Montreal Screwjob“), and was also provoked by Punk. Cena and Hart then sent Punk packing.

There’s still time to order the event if you care to watch the home-town crowd. So be sure to keep tabs on whether or not hometown hero John Cena becomes champion once again, and be extra sure to check in on Jerry Lawler’s condition now and then.
