The Celtics just got a lot taller and lost some knowledge of the English language, all in one day!
Boston elected to sign free agent big man Darko Milicic. Yes, the same Darko Milicic that the Pistons decided to draft INSTEAD of Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh.
Despite the pathetic early part of his career, Milicic has become a solid big man in the NBA (OK, maybe that’s generous). He played the last two years in Minnesota, where just two years ago, he started 69 games and averaged 2.0 blocks per game.
Still, he’s a bit soft, but let’s be honest, you can’t teach size and he’s 7 feet tall, so he should be able to help a bit in the middle. As for the softness? That’s nothing Kevin Garnett can’t solve!
The Darko signing came just hours after the Celtics waived guard Keyon Dooling, who elected to retire.
“Keyon has decided that he has given the NBA 12 good years and that it’s time to pursue other interests and spend more time with his family,” said Dooling’s representative Kenge Stevenson. “He will never forget his time in Boston with the Celtics.”
The energetic guard gave the Celtics a boost in the playoffs last season when Avery Bradley went down, and with a healthy Bradley, Courtney Lee, Jason Terry, and Rajon Rondo dominating next year’s backcourt minutes, maybe Dooling saw the writing on the wall (that writing likely said “No playing time”).
Still just 32 years old, Dooling also walks away from his role as the NBPA’s first vice president of the Executive Committee. So, he was the second man in charge behind Derek Fisher. Now, his role will have to be filled by someone else.
Darko Milicic, perhaps?
