Jonny Gomes, Red Sox Agree to 2-Year Deal

Jonny Gomes (ESPN.com)

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN.com, the Red Sox have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with Jonny Gomes. The free agent spent last season on the Oakland Athletics and can play all over the outfield, as well as DH. This could be a perfect fit for the Red Sox, as they are looking for help in the outfield and at the DH position as David Ortiz could be a huge injury risk coming off his Achilles injury.

Why is Gomes A Good Fit for the Red Sox?

Gomes can definitely help the Red Sox looking into the future. Is he a long-term solution for the Sox? No. The two-year contract, however, could be a perfect fit for the team. But he could definitely help the team moving forward. The 31-year-old played in 99 games last year and had a .262 batting average. He also hit 18 home runs with 47 runs batted in.

The Sox used a total of 9 outfielders last year and Gomes could definitely be a nice addition to the team. Injuries were an issue last seasons. Jacoby Ellsbury battled an injury last year and did not perform up to what we are used to. Also, with Cody Ross being a free agent and not knowing what can happen with that deal, Gomes could be a huge safety net for the team to fall back on.

He Can Produce Vs. Left Handed Pitchers

Gomes did not have the most outstanding numbers overall, but he is a lefty killer. According to FanGraphs.com, Jonny Gomes is among the top 3 active players in OPS vs. lefties in the league. He is only behind Ryan Braun (a former MVP) and Matt Holiday, so he is not in bad company at all. Gomes could prove huge because production vs. left-handed pitchers is critical. He definitely could add a pop to the lineup for the next couple of years.

Jonny Gomes could be a key addition to help the Red Sox for the next couple of years, and his ability to hit left handed pitchers is a huge plus. His production last year proves that he has the ability to be a key role player or even starter in the Sox lineup next year. With all the questions in the outfield, he would have a solid chance of making the starting lineup and could be a nice addition to this dilapidated Red Sox team.

One comment for “Jonny Gomes, Red Sox Agree to 2-Year Deal”

  1. “Red Sox sign OF/DH Johnny Gomes Wednesday to a 2 year, $10M deal. While he’s generally a liability in LF/RF, he has a career .824 OPS and a .284 BA vs. lefties, along with some serious Green Monster power. He should platoon at DH with Ortiz (.268 career BA vs. LHP,) and in RF with Kalish (.645 OPS,) or Nava (.621 OPS.)”
