Vermont Proves Too Much to Handle For Crimson

In a fast-paced game that featured four ties in the first three minutes, the Vermont Catamounts held off the Harvard Crimson in an 85-78 shootout.

Tommy Amaker’s squad struggled at the free throw line all night, and the lack of discipline seemed rolled over into their defensive strategies as well. To their credit, the Crimson hung around the entire game, getting the lead down to just one possession multiple times in the second half, but it was just 10 minutes into the game when they came unglued.

Vermont shot 59.6 percent from the floor all night, with strong performances from Sandro Carissimo, who was 4-of-5 from behind the arc, and Clancy Rugg, who netted 16 off the bench. 10 minutes into the first half, UVM found their stride, really taking their time to set up and execute their pick-and-roll offense — 34 of their points were scored inside the pain on the night.

Harvard snagged 27 rebounds in the second half and drained nine three-pointers, but the 14-point halftime deficit proved to be too much. The team fell to 2-3 on the year, while UVM moves to 4-1, keeping them in first place atop the America East conference.

“When you’re struggling scoring, you want to get to the foul line and kind of stop some things, and it didn’t work for us tonight,” Amaker said after the game.

The Crimson will take on Fordham next on Dec. 1.
