While the Red Sox struggled to finalize the Mike Napoli deal, they had looked at other options like veteran slugger Lance Berkman. The former Astro, Yankee and Cardinal eventually signed with the Texas Rangers, as the Sox presumably never had enough interest to sign Berkman.
The Rangers signed Berkman to a one-year deal worth $11 million. At the age of 36, Berkman has declined and even contemplated retiring before signing with the Rangers. He also contemplated retirement because he has dealt with several knee injuries in the past.
Seeing the price that the Rangers spent on Berkman, the Red Sox were better off not signing him. If the Sox signed Berkman for that much money, they would most likely regret the signing considering he could spend more time on the DL than on the field.
