Celtics Trade Barbosa, Collins to Wizards for Jordan Crawford

It looks like the Celtics are going to stand pat with the roster they have as the NBA season cruises towards the playoffs. In a move that was simply made to acquire another healthy body, multiple media outlets are reporting that the Celtics have sent Leandro Barbosa and Jason Collins to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Jordan Crawford.

Crawford has played in 43 games this season for the Wizards and has career averages of 13 points, three assists and three rebounds per game. The 6-4 guard fell out of the Wizards rotation this season after John Wall returned from injury.

Barbosa, who is out for the season with a torn ACL, will likely be bought out by the Wizards since his contract expires this year. Doc Rivers has expressed interest in bringing Barbosa back next season should he fully recover from his knee surgery in time. Collins has seen limited minutes for the Celtics this season and hasn’t brought much in the way of on-court production to the team.

Crawford is likely to battle for minutes with recently signed guard, Terrence Williams. Look for Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee and Jason Terry to continue to get the bulk of Boston’s backcourt minutes going forward. Williams and Crawford are players acquired to fill in the gaps should exhaustion or foul trouble plague the aforementioned bunch.

This move allows the Celtics to add a useful body without giving up any roster spots or taking on a lot of salary to lunge the team deep into the NBA’s luxury tax zone. If no other moves happen this afternoon, the Celtics will likely add a big man via free-agency with one of their remaining roster spots.

  1. Can’t imagine why the Wiz would make this trade. They basically got nothing in return. There’s got to be a catch, no? What’s your insider insight?
