23-year old Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Drake Britton was arrested at 4:42 a.m. on Saturday morning on misdemeanor charges of reckless driving. Britton drove up to 111 mph in a 45 mph zone while in his black 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, and upon pursuit by the police, he jumped a curb, knocked down a small barbed-wire fence, and continued driving about a quarter of a mile before finally coming to a stop.
The arresting officer smelled alcohol on Britton, who admitted to drinking after refusing a breath test. His speech was slurred and his eyes appeared bloodshot and watery. When asked to retrieve his license, Britton reportedly gave the officer his debit card.
This was Britton’s first appearance in Red Sox spring training, and on Monday the team optioned him to AA Portland, where he pitched last year and held a formidable 4-7 record and 3.72 ERA. According to ESPN.com’s Keith Law, Britton ranks as Boston’s 9th best prospect, but called the pitcher a “dark horse” to possibly break in as a reliever at some point this season.
