The Red Sox, in the offseason, signed Stephen Drew to a one-year deal worth $9.5 million, hoping that he would live up to his contract. So far, it does not look good.
Drew has been injured since March 7th due to a concussion, and it’s looking less likely that he will be ready to play on Opening Day. When the Sox signed Drew, I was disappointed at the amount of money they signed him for. Since Drew was overpaid, he had to be starting shortstop because of the money the Sox gave him.
But, I was also disappointed because it meant Pedro Ciriaco would not be starting. Given that Drew will not be ready, this is the perfect time for Ciriaco to prove of why he is the best option at shortstop and that there was no need for the Sox to sign Drew.
Playing in 76 games last season for the Sox, Ciriaco finished with a .293 avg with 2 home runs, 19 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. During the 2nd half of the 2012 season, Ciriaco was the best of the worst, without a doubt. Out of 256 at bats last season, he only struck out 16 times. Having a terrific 2nd half of the season, Ciriaco did enough to show he deserves to be the starting shortstop. As for today, Ciriaco has been sidelined with back spasms but should be ready by Opening Day.
Since 2010, Drew’s at bats have declined from 151 down to 40 at bats in 2012. Drew has been injury prone and hasn’t been able to stay on the field. Drew starting the season on the DL is not surprising. Drew had complications with his ankle, but with a recent concussion being added to the list, the ten million dollars could be going down the drain.
If Ciriaco put up fantastic numbers with only playing 76 games last season, I would be curious of his performance when playing a full season. Ciriaco’s average may dip a bit, but I see him still contributing to the lineup and giving the team some versatility on the base paths.
