Connelly’s Top Ten: Middlebrooks Goes Off, The Woody Allen is Expensive

1. Red Sox:

* Ellsbury 3-6 and 4th stolen base – trade him now
* Iglesias hitting .529 – trade him now
* Andrew Bailey two appearances, no runs – trade him now
* Middlebrooks goes off – don’t trade him
* 132,293 attended games this weekend in Toronto
* The property of Osmosis – from being in contact with it so often – Lackey’s arm has turned into a Popeye chicken wing
* Melky Cabrera coming off juice is a bad signing – hitting .167

2. Bruins / Celtics:

* Bruins don’t have the spark they need
* Celtics – I told you Randolph is discriminated against
* Michael Ryder has 16 goals for the Habs – that would be leading the Bruins
* How about a summer blockbuster: Seguin, Rask and Lucic in the offseason for value
* Right now – Celtics vs. Knicks in the first round

3. Sloppy Seconds:

Players who were great on their own but were in the shadow of another player:

* Kevin McHale because Larry Bird
* Willie McCovey because of Willie Mays
* Lou Gehrig because of Babe Ruth
* Don Drysdale because of Sandy Koufax
* Scottie Pippen because of Michael Jordan
* Mark Messier because of Wayne Gretzky (although Messier was better)
* Jaromir Jagr to Mario Lemeuix
* Mark McGwire to Jose Canseco

4. Around the MLB:

* Oakland starters – Reddick, Crisp, Lowrie and Moss
* Tito’s Indians on pace to win 81 games
* Pirates off to 1-5 start, and will have to win 81 of the next 156 games to finish over .500
* The Dodgers and Pittsburgh played a 1-0 game that went 8.5 innings that took 3:02

5. Providence Bruins are in first place in the AHL:

* Jamie Tardif has 28 goals in 59 games
* Bobby Robbins has 294 penalty minutes in 69 games
* Goalie Michael Svedberg is 34-8-2 with 2.18 goals against

6. NCAA Hoops:

* Well officiated Michigan – Syracuse game
* 43 fouls in Louisville vs Wichita State game
* I can’t stay up on a work night for the Final
* Even up 12 I never thought the Shockers would beat slick Rick
* Clark Kellogg does a great job (he also did a list for my NBA book

7. Amazing Stat:

Dennis Rodman had five games with at least 30 rebounds

8. Old School:

In honor of Will Middlebrooks big game – Fred Lynn June 18, 1975 against the Tigers:

* He was sick and unsure he could play
* Three home runs and a triple off the top of the fence
* 16 total bases
* Sox won 15-1 and despite 16 runs scored in 8 pitchers – game took 2:26
* Yaz and Rico were 6 for 6

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

The Woody Allen sandwich at Carnegie Deli is Corned Beef with Pastrami – cost $19.95

10. Randomocity:

* When Paul Pierce names his son Prince – doesn’t that mean he thinks he’s the king?
* Joe Thornton – 35 points in 37 games – playoffs coming though
* Four of the seven Canadien teams in the NHL are playoff eligible right now
* Bates Hotel on A&E is worth a watch

  1. Tough day yesterday for past Cy Young winners. Dickey, Price, Verlander, and Cain got roughed up and got the L.

Masterson solid again yesterday. 2-0 and nobody is touching him. Bad trade by Theo.

Questionable calls down the stretch in the Cuse and Michigan game.

REPLY – MPC – I was surprised how calm Boeheim was through those calls / Masterson trade was good if Victor stayed / Dickey in real trouble

  2. In The Shadow: Alydar to Affirmed

REPLY – MPC – Excellent one

  3. Re: your comment, “How about a summer blockbuster: Seguin, Rask and Lucic in the offseason for value”.

Huh??? The Kings won the Cup with the 8th seed last year. Let’s wait to see what happens in the playoffs before we plan to gut the team. To quote the great leader, Sgt. Hulka, “Lighten up, Francis.”

REPLY – MPC – Where’s Tim Thomas when you need him – “you call me Francis – I’ll kill ya”

  4. Seriously, are they any players you dont want to trade?? It’s called supporting the team.
You wwrote off the sox before a pitch was even thrown. I think you’ll soon be singing a different tune. They look pretty good!

REPLY – MPC – Ellsbury is gone at the end of the season get value for him now / Igleisias is not in their plans and they have 5 of the top 50 shortstop prospects in majors so move him while he’s hitting over .300 because he will end up less than .220 / Bailey is a luxury that other teams don’t have (ie. Detroit) so get value back for him – I’d also trade Aceves before he ends up in jail. This is the year to load up – nice job with dodgers trade now keep going and build a perrenial winner with young and old – infield – Bogerts 3b, Maerro SS, Pedroia, Middlebrooks – catching one of their prospects with a Ross behind him / outfield Bradley and two studs – I will up my win total to 83 from 79
