Connelly’s Top Ten: Draft, Great Trade, Sad State of Boston Sports

Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce (Yahoo Sports/Drew Hallowell/Getty Images)

1. NBA Draft:

* Love the trade, Doc Rivers (who didn’t want to be here), 25 minute a game Kevin Garnett and the most over-rated superstar in Boston sports history Paul Pierce for FOUR first round draft picks and some players of varying talents (Evans a great rebounder)
* Did the Celtics have to trade up in front of Minnesota to get Kelly Olynyk? There was no way the NBA would allow Minnesota to draft another white player
* I like the pick – good energy and outside range that will open up paint for Rondo
* Starting five – Rondo, Bradley, Sullinger, Green and Olynyk (guaranteed they win more games (41) than last year!)
* The only other time the Celtics picked 13th they missed with Michael Smith following Len Bias death
* Howl that Rondo and Humphries will be on the same team

2. Aaron Hernandez:

* Will Patriots allow anyone with an Aaron Hernandez shirt to enter the stadium?
* Evidence is overwhelming but the casing in the back of the car he rented, text messages, leaving the body there to be found – just doesn’t add up
* Speaking of the rental car – what’s up with the $40mm guy renting cars
* Can’t believe Chicago Blackhawk coach Joe Quennville is the warden at Bristol County Jail (by the way that warden isn’t missing an interview opportunity)
* How come on these whispers were out there on Hernandez but no media member spoke up? Reminds me of the negative Nomar stories after his departure

3. Red Sox at halfway point:

* On pace to win 96 games
* Nava is on pace for 98 RBI – which is amazing
* Drew family update – Steven Drew is on pace for 130 games (George Glass)
* Napoli and Gomes look like they could rip it up
* Koji Uehara is on pace for 68 appearances
* Farrell and Francona battling for Manager of the Year

4. Bruins scoring slumps::

* Peverley had 3 goals in his last 32 games
* Seguin had 1 goal in his last 27 games
* Lucic had 3 goals in his final 33 regular season games
* Horton had 1 goal in the final 8 regular season games

5. Patriots:

* Can’t cut Tebow now that the home team has to repair its image with good guys
* Some negative comments about Hernandez regarding Welker and Matt Light (surprised they tolerated and paid with the knowledge he was a punk)
* Is Russ Francis available?
* Think guys like Spikes are re-evaluating right now?

6. Pittsburgh Pirates:

Pirates need to go 34-50 the rest of the way to have their first + .500 record since 1992 – the year Tim Wakefield went 8-1 for the Bucs

7. More Hernandez:

* He is 23rd in Patriots history with 175 receptions
* He is 27th in Patriots history with 1,956 receptions
* He is 18th in Patriots history with 18 TD’s
* Taken with the 114th pick behind Hernandez was Dennis Pita, who seems like he is less capable of mayhem and is still good
* Urban Meyer and Florida deserves some blame here with all the reported failed drug tests and you know a whole lot of other nonsense that went on in Gainesville (see picture on TMZ)
* Receptions in college went from 5 to 34 to 68

8. Old School:

Rask and Thomas vs. Gerry Cheevers and Eddie Johnston in two Stanley Cup runs:

1970 and 1972 – Cheevers 18-3 goals allowed 50 / Johnston 6-2 goals allowed 17 = Total 24-7 / GAA 2.16
2011 and 2013 – Thomas 16-9 goals allowed 51 (save % .940) / Rask 14-8 goals allowed 46 (save % .940) = Total 30-17 / GAA 2.06

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Not a good year for rooting against teams and wasting so much negative energy:

* Heat won NBA
* Ravens won NFL
* Rick Pitino and Kentucky win NCAA
* Alabama over Notre Dame

10. Randomocity:

* From Drudge – 27 NFL players arrested since Super Bowl
* Washington Nationals spent the offseason promoting Bryce Harper and Steven Strasburg who have both been injured
* Yankees have $92mm not playing right now with A Rod, Jeter, Teixeira, Youkilis and Granderson out
* Wimbledon upsets – the 3 / 5 / 6 / 10 seeds have been knocked out on men’s side // on women’s side 2 / 3 / 5 / 9 / 10 seeds have lost
* The movie White House Down is an embarrassment to anyone involved from Jamie Foxx to the Key Grip
* Interesting that the two biggest murder cases in Boston – Suspect 1 and Hernandez – were both connected potentially to other murders
* How did Jimmy Chitwood get a free look at the basket?

  1. There’s absolutely no way the Celtics win more than 35 games next year. And even if they were on pace to do so, Ainge would make them tank.

    REPLY – MPC – They will win at least 40

  2. > Can’t cut Tebow now that the home team has to repair its image with good guys

    Yeah right. Tebow will get cut in a nanosecond if he can’t contribute on the field.

    REPLY – MPC – Bill would cut over Kraft

  3. Feels like the “good old days” of Boston sports may be behind us now. Withess today’s Globe: Hernandez in shackles, two! Celtics icons going to the Nets and somewhere in the back was surely a list of Bruins that will not return. It’s been such a fun run – does it really have to end?

    REPLY – MPC – Sad times from the Marathon to Hernandez and everything in between

  4. How many games will that starting five you proposed play in the 2013-14 season?

    Don’t forget about Washington and Girardi as skippers of the year.

    Rick Pitino is the head coach of Louisville.

    Urban Meyer let a lot of stuff go in Gainesville. How many Gators were arrested while he was there? He covered up for Hernandez and others because it’s all about wins!

    I’m not sure if Russ Francis is available but maybe Marv Cook, Ben Coates, or Derrick Ramsey are.

    The East will not be easy for the Heat. Pacers, Nets, and Bulls are on the heels of Miami.
    REPLY – MPC – That starting five is more likely to start 70 than Pierce and Garnett / Marv Cook under-rated / Good help on Pitino / Yes on Girardi

  6. The Celtics want to tank at this point. They want to have a championship team. That doesn’t come easily.

    Ainge will tanks for a better pick.

    With Gerald Wallace at 10mil/yr for the next 3 years, the Celtics won’t look to compete until that contract is off the books.

    Look for Rondo to be traded next. The Celtics would be better off with the draft picks Rondo would provide when it comes to putting together a team for 2016 and on.

    REPLY – MPC – I still think you can get something out of Wallace – I’m staying on my 41 wins

  7. How come these whispers were out there on Hernandez but no media member spoke up?
    Media was deaf, dumb and blind when it came to Manny & Sandusky!

    REPLY – MPC – Sandusky is a great example of these frauds that don’t have the guts – I remember being shocked when all the stuff came out on Nomar after he left and the media knew it for years that he was a fraud
